A 1999 movie with the same name was made from the popular success. The Lost Father, a sequel she authored (1992). She has received praise for her book Off Keck Road, which was nominated for the PEN/Faulkner Award and won the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize (2000).

Together with her ex-husband Richard Appel, Simpson returned to the Los Angeles region in 1994. Simpson began instructing creative writing at UCLA in 2001, and she also holds a position at New York’s Bard College.
